The 9 Ball Pool game is a popular, fast-paced version of professional billiards. Unlike 8-ball, the objective is to hit the lowest-numbered ball on the table first. You do not have to pot the balls in order, but you must make legal contact with the lowest number first. The game is won by the player who legally pockets the 9-ball.
In 9 Ball Pool, the balls are numbered 1 through 9. On every shot, the cue ball must first strike the lowest-numbered ball currently on the table. If you legally pocket any ball (including the 9-ball) after hitting the lowest-numbered ball, you continue to shoot. If you miss, or commit a foul, it is your opponent’s turn. You win instantly if you hit the lowest ball first and then sink the 9-ball (a ‘combo’).
Focus on ‘position play’. Your goal is not just to sink a ball, but to leave the cue ball in a good position for your next shot. If you do not have a good shot, you can intentionally hit the lowest ball and leave the cue ball in a difficult spot for your opponent.

A foul occurs if you hit the wrong ball first, fail to hit any ball, or scratch (sink the cue ball). After a foul, the opponent gets ‘ball-in-hand’, meaning they can place the cue ball anywhere on the table.
It is different. 9 Ball is faster and more aggressive, with more ‘lucky’ wins possible from combos. 8 Ball is often considered more strategic, as you have to clear your entire group of 7 balls. It requires the same precision as a game like Bottle Flip.
